Campaign Example: The Infiltrators

This campaign focuses around a Legendary team that uncovers secrets. This could be handled quietly using stealth, hacking and magic to accomplish the objective, but if things get hairy, this team has the firepower to end any conflicts.
The Infiltrator campaign focuses around a team, so one of the most interesting parts of the design can be the Headquarters or kind of team.
An Independent team might make their own decisions, choosing targets based upon personal vendettas or clients that come to them.
A Government team might be out to end exceptional threats, looking to cover up or exterminate magical problems or rogue agencies.
A Corporate team could be sponsored by a company or agency, but their mission is civilian. It might be interested in learning about magic or trying to uncover the secrets of a corrupt government.

Character Concepts

Hacker
The Hacker focuses on using computers and networks to gain access to the data they need. They may not be the best in a firefight, but they're no stranger to breaking the law. A Hacker who prepares for combat or physical exploration might have a suite of drones that can handle the situation for them. They may also serve as a science officer for the team, being more knowledgeable about general subjects and having access to search technology for quick references.
Hackers with access to magic could create or use extraordinary technology like the AstralNet to connect to computers that are otherwise inaccessible.
Extraordinary Attribute ideas
Creation: Make an AstralNet app, create a new system out of scraps
Energy: EMP a drone. Power a computer off the grid.
Prescience: Connect a computer to an Atlantis crystal orb. Get a video feed from a distant location with no camera.

Operative
The Operative is experienced in wet ops, black ops and covert activity in general. They are a well-rounded point person who is comfortable with hand-to-hand combat, firearms and stealth. They can talk their way out of a situation and wear a disguise when needed.
While the Operative doesn't necessarily understand magic, they excel at using any advantage that comes to hand.
Operatives with access to magic can use it to enhance their abilities, especially their ability to move undetected or remain unnoticed.
Extraordinary Attribute ideas
Alteration: Turn invisible. Change their appearance.
Influence: Make a target forget they exist. Charm their way into a party.
Movement: Teleport through shadows. Run double speed.

Arcanist
The Arcanist is the specialist in magic. This means more than just having magical ability; it means being focused on understanding and detecting magic. This typically means a focus on Prescience. This can also make the Arcanist the communications link between team members as well as between the team and HQ.
Extraordinary Attribute Ideas
Prescience: Read auras. Find the source of a magic. Read the thoughts of a magical beast.
Thief
Some things need to be liberated. Or stolen. The Thief is a specialist in breaking and entering, codes, security systems and everything in between. In combat, the Thief takes the cheap shot and brings down the big target. Some Thieves are experts in the mundane world with their skills refined on the streets. Others are magical people using their innate skills to make their way in the mundane.
Extraordinary Attribute Ideas
Alteration: Turn invisible. Slip through the crack of a door.
Movement: Blink up to a catwalk. Move too fast to follow.

Face
The Face talks, cajoles and encourages. Master of the social situation, the Face can make anyone believe them. The Face can also be an excellent choice for the leader or moderator of the team, diffusing tensions between conflicting personalities. In the Legendary world, the Face is comfortable with the magical and knows how to get the magical and mundane to work together.
The Face focuses on magical abilities that enhance their ability to charm others.
Extraordinary Attribute Ideas
Influence: Get invited indoors. Make a target flip allegiance.
Prescience: Speak a new language. Listen to a target's thoughts.

Sharpshooter
The Sharpshooter is a hunter and a marksperson. Their abilities lie in silence and patience. When undetected, the sharpshooter can track any target. When forced to flee or pursue, the sharpshooter is fleet of foot and tireless. Sharpshooters may use a variety of weapons from firearms to bows or magical spells.
Their Extraordinary abilities focus on added damage and staying hidden.
Extraordinary Attribute Ideas
Alteration: Turn invisible. Make a blind.
Energy: Enhance a bullet. Create laser beams.

Demolitions Expert
Someone has to blow things up. At least, if you ask the Demolitions Expert. This doesn't have to be just explosives. Some of the best Demolitions Experts are Trolls with oversized hammers. When you want it to rain concrete, call the Demo Expert in.
Magical abilities for the Demolitions Expert focus on making explosions and inflicting damage.
Extraordinary Attribute Ideas
Energy: Blow. Things. Up.
Protection: Keep allies from being buried alive. Use a barrier to keep your fuse dry.

The AstralNet

The AstralNet is a Dwarven creation that parallels the Internet. Using it magicals can communicate without crossing over mundane channels. There are a variety of apps and websites that link to the AstralNet for easy access. The AstralNet doesn't have the same information resources as the Internet but it does support a number of chat and messaging programs, bulletin boards and other information sharing resources. Magic spellbooks and reference guides have been scanned and shared online as well as guides to many beneficial and dangerous magical beasts. The AstralNet is also a source of jobs and tasks for entrepreneurs. These range from legal jobs that require magical skill to illegal black or wet ops. AstralNet servers are large, heavily enchanted computers. They are kept safely and securely deep within the Earth where only Dwarves go.

No Spellbooks - No Limits!

A major benefit of Open Legend RPG over others is the way magical effects are constructed. There are no spellbooks! While I love reading RPG books, I dislike reading and comprehending spell listings. Open Legend gives easy tools to simplify this. The concept of a 'spell' in Open Legend can be one of a few things, generally referred to as 'Favored Actions' in the example Archetypes given in the rules. They can be damaging attacks, just like you would make with a sword or bow, Banes - which are harmful effects, generally placed on enemies, or Boons - helpful effects placed on oneself or an ally. These effects are also not limited by levels of power or slots, so you can use each of them as many times per day/game as you like! Most require a simple action to use, the same as an attack in combat. One of the most fun and creative things to do in Open Legend is take these general, mechanical game effects and transform them into unique actions that describe your character...

Campaign Example: The Infiltrators Adventure 1

Last night on twitch.tv/time2tabletop I got the opportunity to start bringing Legends of Today to life! This was a first Open Legend game for all the players and one of the first RPGs ever for 2 of the players. With that in mind I simplified out the magical races and just focused on 'normal' characters. So this was a proof of concept for the modern setting, not the idea of including magic. I learned a few things: 1. Loose notes are good notes. I kept the things the players liked best and skipped anything they didn't. 2. Fights in Open Legend can be brutal! This might be luck, but last time I ran OL, the party ran right over the opposition. This time, I immediately exploded the dice in a big way against a PC. They were knocked unconscious immediately. 3. Unsurprisingly, there is a big difference between a Power Level 7 and Power Level 5. The attacks made at Power Level 7 proved unstoppable against Level 1 players. I took note of the names the players wanted to use bu...
